About Daniel

Daniel J. Bounds founded Bounds and Bounds, PLLC in 2022 and serves as the Managing Partner of the Firm.  Before practicing law, Daniel accumulated his experience through various leadership roles in both the private and public sectors.  Graduating from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in History, Daniel commissioned as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps.  Daniel was promoted to Captain in 2017 and served from 2012 to 2020 in various active and reserve duty roles as a combat engineer officer.  Daniel’s time in the reserves allowed him to gain valuable business experience through holding leadership roles in the private sector: from operations manager at LKQ Corporation, a Fortune 500 company; to running the NATO conference center at Alion Science and Technology.

Daniel earned his law degree from Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center while also attending George Mason University’s Law School for his final three semesters.  During law school, Daniel held various legal positions, serving as a clerk to Judge Jeffrey Parker in Virginia’s 20th Judicial Circuit and working with the private firm of Turbitt, Leach, & Crum in Fairfax, Virginia.

After law school, Daniel gained valuable trial experience as an Associate Attorney with Howard, Clark & Howard in Warrenton, Virginia.  At Howard, Clark & Howard, Daniel primarily worked as a trial attorney, serving clients in civil, domestic, and criminal matters.  While gaining trial experience, Daniel simultaneously grew his business law practice, serving a wide range of businesses, including those focusing on Virginia’s cannabis market.

Today, Daniel’s diverse practice is enhanced by his past business experience, trial experience, and his time in numerous military and civilian leadership positions.  Daniel also serves as General Counsel for AgriTech LLC, a tech company focusing on merging technology and agriculture to ensure a sustainable future.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

A domestic case that went to trial where I was able to get the father I represented primary custody of his three children. The mother had left the marital home to be with a local sheriff's deputy. The sheriff's deputy (female) was sending inappropriate sexual text messages to the oldest child (15 y.o. boy) and the mother refused to condemn those actions by the deputy. Not only did I get my client primary custody, he was able to maintain the marital home in the follow on divorce, and the deputy was fired after the trial when my cross examination of that witness exposed the deeply inappropriate text messages with the child.

How did you build a successful practice?

From the ground up and not rushing into the practice of law. Out of undergraduate school (history major at Virginia Tech) I joined the USMC as a combat engineer officer. From there I served in both active and reserve roles. While in the reserves I maintained various jobs with large corporations and government contractors. Not satisfied with that work, I returned to law school (LSU) on the GI bill. After law school I worked for a small firm and focused on being a trial attorney along with building a network of business clients. When the timing was right, I left to start my own practice so I could focus more on my clients' legal needs.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Integrity. Honesty. Courage. A lawyer should never cloud their client's mind with ideas for the sole purpose to keep them happy in the moment. A lawyer should be honest about their client's situation every step of the way, even if that means giving advice they do not want to hear. Honesty breeds integrity. Telling clients the hard truth takes courage.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

This is situationally dependent on the facts of every case. No attorney should be represent that their familiarity with any local jurisdiction will yield favorable results.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Criminal consultations are always free. I am usually able to provide a free 10-15 minute consultation for all matters to ensure I can give an accurate picture of what may lie ahead before I engage a potential client with a paid consultation.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Name, contact information (phone, email, home address), and the facts of the matter at hand.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

My warrior ethos from my service as a Marine for 8 years. I study every case and dispute like I would a battlefield. I war-game every possible scenario with my clients and ensure they understand the strengths and weaknesses of their position.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping people and business avoid the stress of the adverse legal system.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Sports car racing, astronomy and space, reading (mostly WWII history), gardening, nature.

Are you involved in your community?

I work with local businesses that are engaged in the fight against climate change and for sustainable agriculture.
