About Travis
TRAVIS MEDLOCK was born on August 28, 1934, the son of the Reverend Melvin K. Medlock and Mayne Dubose Medlock. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wofford College and holds the highest rating (AV) for professional competence and ethics extended by the respected national attorneys rating publication Martindale and Hubble . He has two sons, Tom and Glen, of his marriage to Laura Virginia Orr. As indicated above, Mr. Medlock has practiced law in his state since 1960 and among his clients have been: S.C. State Employment Security Commission (Employment Relations); Department of Juvenile Corrections (Employment Relations); Lander College (Employment Relations); Department of Transportation (General Trial Defense) S.C. Methodist Conference of the United Methodist Church; S.C. Lutheran Synod; S.C. Education Association (Chief Trial Attorney); S.C. Press Association; Central S.C. Chapter, Society of Professional Journalist; League of Women Voters of the U.S.; Business Women's Club of the U.S.' Equal Rights Amendment America; Republic Industries (Government Liaison Consultant to H. Wayne Huizenga and staff). Office of the S.C. State Attorney General Charles Condon (Consultant on Organized Gambling Issues); Home Finance, Inc. (Government Liaison with S.C. Office of Attorney General RE: Settlement of National Class Actions). Mr. Medlock has handled numerous adversarial administration hearing and tried cases in the state Court of Common Pleas and the Federal District Court; and argued in the State Supreme court and federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
As a Legislator, Mr. Medlock served on the Judiciary Committees of both the State Senate and the House of Representatives. Labeled by the media as a young Turk Legislator, he confronted the problems of hunger and racial discrimination head on and some of his aggressive reform efforts were covered by the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor among other publications. As Attorney General, he was the father of the State Grand Jury System, a significant institutional change for crime control in his state. His appointment and hiring of minorities and women to key leadership positions was innovative and aggressive. On the Civil Rights Front, he pushed the Legislature for South Carolina's first Public Accommodations Act and issued the controversial official opinion that the Confederate Flag flew atop the Statehouse dome without legal authority.
In his spare time, Mr. Medlock enjoys doing things with his family, fishing, target shooting with pistols and playing touch football with the willing among his friends and associates.
